Jeffrey Mark provides the unique blended perspectives of having served as healthcare planner, state regulator, design architect and hospital department manager. His leadership positions have given him in-depth knowledge of complex problem solving and the needs of diverse interests. He has a proven track record of successful projects by application of a problem-solving approach and collaborative team building.
He offers the skill sets of having managed and executed facility work from minor renovations to full replacement facilities. He has assisted healthcare systems, academic medical centers, community hospitals, and ambulatory facilities in their facility development and operations improvement.
Among his accomplishments are:
- Developed Plans of Correction for State and Life Safety Code compliance and regulatory issues;
- Prepared and defended successful Certificate of Need applications for Hospitals and Ambulatory Care Centers;
- Medical planning and programming of +2 million SF of inpatient and outpatient facilities. These projects have included: Level I Trauma, Level III Neonatology, Comprehensive Burn Center, and multi-specialty interventional laboratories;
- Master site and facility plans for healthcare campuses ranging from 100 to 800 beds;
- Planning, functional space programming and/or design for 8 new hospitals, US and international;
- Department/facility optimization studies for over 30 perioperative, radiology and emergency service departments and a LEAN Kaizen event for Robotic Surgery;
- Directed the review of $13 billion of Certificate of Need applications for the establishment of new and expansion of existing facilities;
- Developed the standards for population based health facility need, as well as architectural and financial criteria for the State of Illinois; and
- Oversaw the development of $300+ million (current dollars) in healthcare projects.
Currently the Principal of JSMA LLC, a healthcare consultancy, Mr. Mark founded the firm in 1995 but paused this practice in 2003 to serve as the Executive Secretary to the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board. In previous positions, he served as a Managing Associate in Coopers & Lybrand’s healthcare management consulting practice and as the Hospital Architect and Director of Program, Planning and Development for Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
Mr. Mark studied at the University of Illinois, Urbana where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree. He earned a Master of Architecture Degree from Virginia Tech where he was awarded an AIA/AHA Fellowship in Healthcare Design and a research grant from the Eastern Virginia Medical Authority. In 2006 he earned a Fellowship in the Mid America Public Health Leadership Institute.
A frequent speaker on healthcare planning and development, Mr. Mark recently served as an Adjunct Faculty in the College of Health Professions, Governors State University and is a guest lecturer in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Northern Illinois University. He is a licensed architect, a holder of NCARB certification, and certified in LEAN Healthcare.
